Karen Rand Anderson (b.1953) graduated with honors from Rhode Island School of Design in 1977 with a BFA in ceramics, and in 2010 received her MFA in mixed media studio art through the Northern Vermont University/Vermont Studio Center master’s program in Johnson, VT. She also studied at Lyme Academy of Fine Arts, and has completed residencies at Vermont Studio Center, at the Chateau Orquevaux Artist Residency program in France, in Bulgaria through the Griffis Foundation/Orpheus Foundation, and at I-Park Artist’s Enclave in East Haddam CT. She shows regionally and nationally in juried, invitational and solo exhibitions.

Karen's deep involvement with visual art has spanned many different mediums, including glass and ceramics. Her early mixed-media sculpture (2004-2012) utilized natural materials such as vines, branches, rocks, moss and fleece, as well as appropriated objects and charred paper. The concepts informing that work revolved around relationship and intimacy, referencing physical and emotional tension and metaphorical imagery. She produced a series of large format drawings (4x5') relating to the sculpture from that period. 

As a painter, Anderson’s recent work focuses on an exploration of landscape informed by intuitive mark-making, layering of color, gestural brushwork, and spontaneity. The mixed media paintings are colorful references to vista and memory, drawing the viewer into a personal experience of abstracted, remembered or imagined landscape.
